STYLING GUIDE FOR MOTHERHOOD IN MONOCHROME
““Of all the things you wear, your expression is the most important.””
Hello! I am sooo looking forward to these motherhood sessions with you! I have read your questionnaires—smiled so big through them and shed some tears too…that’s motherhood for ya, isn’t it?
A FEW REMINDERS
These 30-minute sessions will be held at the ESP studio on the South Hill in Spokane, WA on April 11 and 13, 2025. We'll play, snuggle, sing, dance and capture you and your littles in this season. Twenty-five images are included in the session fee. Additional images may be purchased for $25/image or an additional $100 for the entire gallery. We will play, talk, snuggle and the most important part of this is showing up with your littles and connecting with them however they offer that! The “monochrome” vision for these sessions is to have you pick one of the backdrop colors and use that color as your guide in styling. I’ve created this page to offer some helpful tips in putting together styling for the session. With that, let’s jump in!
COLORS
Olive-green, gulf-blue, tan and white will be the available backdrop colors. No matter which backdrop color you choose, we will also be using the white walls and floors of the studio to give you a variety. When you choose your color, think of that color as a guide for the outfit. If you choose green for example, you may decide to wear khaki or white pants but style a green top, tan shoes, and green pops for your children. That would be beautifully “monochrome” as I envision it! You might include some light olive green and some dark olive green. While the backdrop provides a guide for the color element of the shoot, feel free to include a range of neutrals alongside your pops of color.
LAYERS and TEXTURE and PATTERNS
While our outfits may be streamlined in the color department, they don’t have to be boring! Mixing textures in an outfit adds depth, contrast, and visual interest. Layering allows us to change our outfits easily and maximize our time by creating variety.
-the softness of silk or gleam of satin catches light so beautifully
-the texture of denim creates an effortlessly chic look
-knitwear—especially chunky knit sweaters on kids or mamas—creates a casual, cozy vibe
-wool gives off a luxurious yet grounded look.
-the light, airy movement of chiffon adds interest during playful moments
-the natural nature of linen pairs well against skin
-sparkly sequins are just fun
-lace provides so much interest — sophisticated, old-world-eque, and feminine
ACCESSORIES
A very fast way to add personality!!! Striped socks, backwards baseball caps, beanies, rings, earth-toned sandals or shoes, lace gloves, oversized earrings, suspenders, a string of pearls, bucket hats, knee high socks, geometric sunglasses, eyeglasses with fun rims, flower crowns, wide-brimmed hats, scarves, or hair-clips—so many options! If you are unsure or can’t decide, bringing a little bin of accessories can be a great way for us to create on the fly. Keep in mind that the more you can weave your session COLOR even in the props and accessories, the better!
PROPS
Props help us keep the kids engaged and can be a great way to weave your dominant COLOR into these monochrome sessions! Examples would be: wooden toys, cars, oversized balloons, a giant slinky, juggling scarves, bubble wand, vintage dolls, pinwheels, old school camera, binoculars, typewriter, wooden blocks, skateboard, magnifying glass, giant lollipops, fake mustaches, favorite book, capes, superhero masks, old school telephone, favorite stuffed animals, a blanket. ! We will make sure to get some pictures with props and some without.
Please reach out with any questions! The most important part of this session is YOU and your love for your children. The rest of this is just FUN. :) Looking forward to this! XO, Emily
